Our Story

The 16-acre farm our sanctuary is located on has been in the Smith Family for over 100 years. William E. Smith and his wife built their home and other structures on the farm in the early 1940s. For decades, he raised mainly hogs. However, in the early 1990s, Mr. Smith brought goats to the farm and quickly fell in love with their quirky personalities. He maintained a haven for them until he passed. For the past 20+ years, decedents of the original goats have been lovingly cared for by Jason, a dedicated friend of the Smith Family and the goats’ biggest fan. Jason dreamed of transforming the farm into a rescue/sanctuary and with the help of his neighbor, Jesi, this dream has come true as of December 2024 when we became an official 501c3 and rescued 3 goats. Currently, the sanctuary is home to 34 sweet, happy goats who enjoy their days simply being adorable companions - they aren’t used for anything except spreading joy! We look forward to the day we can open to the public for events and tours. Thank you for visiting our site and becoming part of our journey! We can’t wait to see you at the farm!

Our Mission

Smith Farm Goat Sanctuary aims to rescue and provide a lifelong sanctuary for goats and potentially other farm animals in the future, preserve and celebrate Fuquay Varina's farming history, and offer fun, inclusive, educational, family friendly events and programs for the community.

Our Plans

We are currently undergoing a major fence and goat housing repair and upgrade project to ensure the safety of our goats and visitors once we open to the public.

We plan to begin offering programs and events in May 2025! Our goal is to offer a wide range of activities for the community to enjoy. From animal encounters and educational programs to craft making workshops and volunteer opportunities, there will be something for everyone. Check out our events calendar for upcoming offerings such as "goatayoga", crafting and movie nights with the goats, and more - we hope these offerings will be an experience you won't forget!
